ComfyUI and Qwen-Image 2.1: What the New Image Model Means for a Shop

A free image model that cuts out products with real transparency and edits from ten reference photos, run in ComfyUI on your own computer. What it does, what it needs, and the licence line to read first.

On 20 September 2026 Alibaba’s Qwen team released Qwen-Image 2.1, and ComfyUI supported it the same day. Most model releases matter only to people who follow models. This one is worth ten minutes if you sell products online, because it is aimed squarely at the dullest job in e-commerce: product images.

Here is what it is, without the hype.

What ComfyUI is

ComfyUI is a free program for running AI image models on your own computer. Instead of typing a sentence into a website, you connect boxes: load a model, give it a prompt or a photo, set the size, save the result. That chain of boxes is called a workflow.

It looks technical, and it is. The reason people accept that is repeatability. Once a workflow produces a good result for one product, you can run it on four hundred, and every image comes out the same size, the same style, with the same background. Your photos also never leave your machine.

What is new in Qwen-Image 2.1

One model that both creates and edits. Earlier you needed one model to generate an image and another to change an existing one. This one does both with the same file.

Real transparency. It produces images with a true transparent background, not a white one you cut out afterwards. A product cut-out, a logo or an icon comes out ready to place on any page.

Up to ten reference images. You can give it several photos — the product from three angles, a model, a room — and ask for one combined image.

Readable text and large output. It writes text inside images legibly, and it works natively at about 2000 pixels a side, which is enough for a marketplace listing or a banner.

Small enough for one graphics card. At 7 billion parameters it is light by current standards. Testers report around 16 GB of video memory for the full-quality version, and compressed versions that run on less, more slowly.

ComfyUI ships three ready-made workflows for it: text to image, image editing, and background removal. You need ComfyUI 0.37 or newer.

Where this helps a shop

  • Background removal. Marketplaces want products on a clean background. This is now one workflow, run across a whole catalogue.
  • Consistent images. Supplier photos arrive in ten styles. Editing them to one size, one background and one lighting makes a shop look like one shop.
  • Context images. The same chair in a living room, on a terrace, in an office — from a photo of the chair, without a photo shoot.
  • Banners and social posts with the product and readable text in one image.

The licence line to read first

This is the part most enthusiastic articles skip.

Earlier Qwen-Image models were released under Apache 2.0, which allows commercial use. Qwen-Image 2.1 is released under the Qwen Research License, which is for non-commercial use only. Using its output to sell your products is commercial use, and that needs a separate licence from Alibaba.

“Open” here means you can download it and try it. It does not mean you can build your catalogue on it for free. Before any model touches images you will publish, check its licence — that applies to every model, not only this one.

What it does not do

  • It does not replace the photo. It edits and extends real product photos well. A product invented from a description is not your product, and a customer who receives something different sends it back.
  • It can change details. A logo, a label, the number of buttons. Every image needs a person to compare it with the real item before it is published — the same rule as for AI-written descriptions.
  • It is not finished on day one. Early testers found washed-out colours and weak hands, and the community published a fix within three days. Expect settings to keep changing for a few weeks.
  • It needs hardware and patience. A suitable graphics card costs more than a year of most image services, and the first working workflow takes an evening, not five minutes.

Should you install it?

If you have a few dozen products: no. Good photos and an hour of editing will do more for you.

If you have hundreds of products and someone technical on the team: try it. It costs nothing to test, and you will learn what is now possible. Sort out the licence before the results go on your store.

If you would rather have the images than the hobby: that is what our product image services are for. AI product image enhancement and marketplace image editing are €2 per product — cleaned, cut out, corrected to the marketplace rules, and checked by a person against the real product.

The model is real progress. The useful question is not which model is newest, but whether your product pages show the product clearly. Start there.
