Website or Marketplace: Which Should You Start With?

They solve different problems. One gives you customers now and takes a commission; the other builds something you own. Most businesses need both, in a specific order.

This is the question we are asked most often, and the answer depends on one thing: whether you need customers this month or a business in three years. Ideally both, but they are not the same project.

What a marketplace gives you

A marketplace — eMAG, Amazon, Allegro, Temu — already has the customers. You publish your products and people who were going to buy that product anyway can buy it from you.

Strengths

  • Customers arrive without you paying for traffic.
  • Trust is borrowed from the platform, so a new seller can make a first sale quickly.
  • Setup is cheap: eMAG from €100, most other platforms €150, first 50 products €100.

Costs and limits

  • The platform takes a commission on every order.
  • You compete on the same page as everyone else, often on price.
  • You do not own the customer relationship. No email list, no repeat marketing.
  • The rules, the fees and the ranking are the platform’s to change.

What your own store gives you

Strengths

  • No commission on each sale.
  • You own the customer data, so a second sale costs almost nothing.
  • You control the presentation, the bundles, the pricing and the brand.
  • It is an asset that keeps its value.

Costs and limits

  • Nobody arrives by themselves. Traffic is yours to earn or buy.
  • The first sale takes longer.
  • A complete store starts from €990, plus payment and courier connections.

The order that usually works

For a business with products and no online sales yet:

  1. Start on one marketplace. Learn what actually sells, at what price, with what return rate. This is market research that pays for itself.
  2. Build the store while the marketplace runs. Use the product photos and descriptions you have already made — they work on both.
  3. Shift the repeat buyers to your store. A card in the parcel, a better price for ordering directly, a loyalty reason.
  4. Keep the marketplace for discovery. New customers find you there; the good ones come back to you directly.

The exception is a business selling something distinctive — handmade, designed, locally known, service-attached. There, the marketplace commoditises you, and your own store should come first.

Doing both without doubling the work

The reason businesses resist running both is operational: two stocks, two price lists, two order inboxes. That is solvable, and it is exactly what integration is for.

  • Stock synchronisation — €290
  • Marketplace price updates — from €150
  • Marketplace order management — from €290/month
  • Automatic product import — €290

Connected properly, one product catalog feeds both channels and one stock figure keeps them honest. Without that, the second channel really does cost double — and that is when businesses conclude that marketplaces “do not work”.

A short answer

If you need revenue soon and your products are comparable to others: marketplace first. If your products are distinctive and repeat buying is likely: your own store first. If you intend to be serious about selling online: both, connected, within the first year.
