How Courier Integration Saves Time

Copying addresses into a courier portal is a job that should not exist. What a proper connection does, what it costs, and how to work out whether it pays.

Most online stores start the same way. An order arrives by email. Someone opens the courier’s website, types the name, the address, the phone number and the weight, prints the label, then copies the tracking number back into an email to the customer.

It takes four or five minutes per parcel and it works — until it is thirty parcels a day and somebody’s afternoon disappears.

What “integration” actually means

Connecting your store to the courier means the two systems talk to each other directly. In practice:

  • The shipping document (AWB) is created from the order, with no typing.
  • The tracking number comes back into the order automatically.
  • The customer is told the parcel has shipped, and told again when it arrives.
  • The courier’s status updates appear where your team already works.

Nothing exotic. It simply removes a copying job.

What it costs

  • Courier connection — €290 for FAN Courier, Sameday, Cargus, DPD, GLS, DHL, UPS, FedEx, TNT, Packeta; €250 for several Romanian couriers
  • Automatic AWB — €150
  • Shipment tracking for customers — €100
  • Automatic delivery messages — €100
  • Return shipment handling — €150

A typical first setup — one courier, automatic AWB, tracking and messages — is about €640.

Whether it pays

Work it out with your own numbers rather than ours.

Four minutes saved per parcel, at twenty parcels a day, is eighty minutes a day. Across a month that is roughly thirty hours. Whatever an hour of your team’s time is worth, the setup pays for itself somewhere in the first or second month at that volume.

Below about five parcels a day it is genuinely not urgent. Above twenty it is overdue.

The savings people do not count

Typing mistakes. A wrong address means a returned parcel, a second delivery charge and an unhappy customer. Integration removes that class of error entirely, because nobody retypes anything.

Support calls. “Where is my order?” is the most common message any store receives. Tracking on your website plus automatic messages removes most of them.

Lockers and pickup points. Locker delivery (€150) and pickup-point delivery (€150) are cheaper than home delivery and avoid failed attempts. Customers increasingly prefer them.

Choosing the cheapest courier per order. Shipping price comparison (€150) picks the cheapest suitable option automatically. With mixed parcel sizes this is often the item that pays for the whole project.

Where to start

One courier, connected properly, with automatic documents and customer messages. Add a second courier when you have a reason — usually price, coverage or a customer segment that wants a specific one.

Do not connect five couriers on day one. Each connection is real configuration, and a courier you barely use is a maintenance cost without a return.
